UN General Assembly Enters Final Debate Day

VOA, September 29, 2008

The United Nations General Assembly is wrapping up its annual debate in New York with the final 30 speakers, including officials from Burma, Ecuador, Jordan, South Africa and the Vatican.

Foreign ministers and ambassadors from all over the world will raise pressing global issues on the final day of the week-long debate Monday. The assembly met for a special session Saturday. Speakers that day included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, and North Korea's Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pak Kil Yon.

Throughout this year's General Assembly, world leaders have called for international cooperation to address the global financial crisis, climate change and terrorism.

The Middle East peace process gained special attention throughout the week, during official debate and in meetings on the sidelines of the Assembly.

Last week, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he is committed to peace with Israel, but said partial or interim solutions will undermine the peace process.

Israeli President Shimon Peres also said his country is ready to negotiate full peace with the Palestinians.
