US Diplomat Holds Talks in Pakistan as Violence Erupts

The top U.S. diplomat for South Asian affairs held talks Sunday with Pakistani officials in Islamabad.   Richard Boucher is in Pakistan to press for the government to do more to combat terrorism.

During Boucher's visit, fighting between militants and government forces erupted elsewhere in the country.

A Pakistani military official said fighter jets killed 25 Islamist fighters today in the northwestern Swat Valley.

Meanwhile, near the Afghan border in Bajur district, authorities said Pakistani military aircraft bombed insurgent positions. One report in the Associated Press says several militants were killed.

Also Sunday, police said a roadside bomb planted to strike a Pakistani lawmaker exploded in the southwestern part of the country, killing at least one person nearby and wounding some others.
