If God is Laughing...What's So Funny?

Does GOD laugh?  Is there something that makes him laugh?   What could it be?

But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither. And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee?  Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?  The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed forever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow. 2 Kings 5:25-27

Gehazi, Elisha's servant, just couldn't stand it.  God, through Elisha, had just healed a wealthy man, Naaman, from a wealthy nation, Syria, of leprosy.  But when Naaman offered Elisha compensation in the form of gold, silver, and Syrian garments in payment for his healing, Elisha refused.  Elisha understood that GOD had healed Naaman.  Why should he take money for something GOD had so graciously done for Naaman?  Gehazi did not comprehend Elisha's reasoning; in fact it was more than Gehazi could understand, and he said so:

But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 2 Kings 5:20

Some of us, when we don't agree with choices someone else has made, will be scornfully vexed by it.  But the more we contemplate it, the more likely we are apt to act on our disagreement.  Gehazi must have disagreed very strongly, for he subsequently made a dreadful decision: " as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him"

Gehazi acted on his disagreement and ran after Naaman, lied to him, and went away with two talents of silver and two sets of clothing.  The plunder he received by deceit, he then had to hide, to keep Elisha from finding out.   When Elisha asked him where he had been, Gehazi felt he had to lie about that as well.

Gehazi's path was manifested first by a scornful critical spirit, which led to disobedience, dishonesty, deceit and finally more lies. How could this happen? How could a man who was personal servant to the prophet Elisha, fail so miserably?

The answer is simple... Greed!

Greed drove Gehazi to being critical. Then disobedience. To cover his disobedience and still get what he came for, Gehazi was driven to dishonesty. Then to keep Elisha from finding out, he resorted to deceitfulness. The root of it all was greed. Greed bred one sin after another.  God does not deal lightly with greed.  A little bit of greed may seem innocent enough in its early stages, but it can quickly grow into a deadly enemy, for it will quickly breed a host of other sins.  Some of these sins are illustrated in GOD's Word.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.  If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.  Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.  And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.  So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?  Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at naught all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.  For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.  But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.  Proverbs 1:10-33

GOD proclaims that greed takes away the life of a person.  Greed has absolutely no respect for others.  Making a goal to "fill our houses with spoil" no matter whom or what else is destroyed is the wail of the greedy.  By reading and meditating on the characteristics of those greedy for gain it is seen that living a greedy life is living an evil life.

GOD promises that even if greed rules your life, He will reprove you.  He will come after you. to save you from yourself.  In fact, He says He will pour His Spirit on you.  He will make Himself known to you.the creator of the universe will make Himself known to you!  GOD declares He will come after you to turn you from wickedness to holiness.   He will give you the choice, no matter your condition.  It is your choice.

The choice is yours, and yours alone.  GOD offers His hand to help.  You can reject GOD's reproof and counsel if you wish.  He will let greed, or any wickedness, take life from you.if you wish.  If you choose wickedness at that point, GOD pronounces that He will laugh at your calamity and He will mock when your fear comes.  When GOD laughs, under these circumstances, it is definitely not very funny at all.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

GOD loves you. GOD is longsuffering with respect to you. God will reprove you.  He does not want any to perish.  He wishes all should come to repentance.  But, after all His love, longsuffering and prodding, you do not want anything to do with Him.He will respect your choice.  When your end finally comes to you it will be as a whirlwind.  You will be allowed to eat of the fruit that you have made for yourself.  Do you hear laughter?

Voltaire, the famous eighteenth century author and philosopher, who apparently rejected GOD's reproving his whole life, had terrifying words to say on his deathbed.

"I am abandoned by God and man! I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months' life. Then I shall go to hell; and you will go with me. O Christ! O Jesus Christ!..."

At the time of his death Voltaire, called on the LORD and received no answer (" Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices") .  At that instant, his last, Voltaire most probably believed what is stated in the book of Hebrews.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:31

Wickedness or holiness.what is your choice?
