Nuggets of Truth

Throughout scriptures are nuggets of scientific fact given to the people of the ancient world, but these facts were about things that they could not have fully understood when they received them. These hidden nuggets of truth are signs of the divine authorship of the Bible and GOD's interest in our knowing some of His secrets.

In the first chapter of Genesis God created plants and animals "after their kind".

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.  And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.  And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. Genesis 1:11, 21, 24

These are very concise statements of genetics, which were stated thousands of years before discovered by Gregor Mendel.  The Bible describes biogenesis and the stability of each kind of living organism.  The phrase "after his kind" stresses the reproductive integrity of each kind of animal and plant.  We know this occurs because all these different reproductive systems are programmed by individual genetic codes.  This information was in, "nugget form" in the Bible at a time when Greeks and other ancient peoples believed in spontaneous generation of life and that animals could change from one kind to another.  This nugget of truth about the science of genetics shows an authorship beyond the human knowledge of its time.

After Abraham proved his faith and trust in the LORD, GOD promised him blessings and that his descendants  will be "as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore".

That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; Genesis 22:17

Although Abraham couldn't have seen them at the time, God was telling him that there were trillions of stars in the sky, even though Abraham could only have seen a few thousand stars with his naked eye. Only in the last century was the reality of this statement been fully understood, as telescopes have been able to see the trillions of stars that exist in the Universe.

Scientists today still do not know how many stars are in the heavens.  There have been estimates made of 10 21 (10 with 21 zeros following) stars in existence.  As for grains of sand on the Earth's seashores, the estimate is somewhere near 10 25 grains of sand.  It is possible that both these extremely large numbers might match?  As astronomers discover more and more stars, the number of grains of sand might be found to equal the number of stars in the universe.

Job while conversing with his "comforting friends" tells of the greatness of GOD Almighty, in the process of which he make an amazing statement that the "earth hangs on nothing".

He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.  Job 26:7

This was an idea not shared by Job's pagan neighbors. The Hindus believed that the earth rested on the back of an elephant that stood on the back of a turtle that swam in the eternal sea.  Reminiscent of the story of "Horton Hears a Who"!  The Greeks of that time believed that the earth was a solid base, the sky was a solid dome over it and that the Sun was a chariot that rode across the sky every day. Other peoples, around the world, believed comparable imaginary prattle.

Why did Job make such a statement?  How did he know?  Only GOD Himself could have revealed this knowledge to Job.

The third book in the Bible, Leviticus, was written before 1400 B.C.  The function and value of blood was described at that time.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.  Leviticus 17:11

Blood carries water and nourishment to every cell in the body.  Blood maintains body temperature and removes waste products from every part of the body.  The blood also transports oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.  William Harvey discovered that blood circulation is the key factor in physical life. Harvey's discovery, in 1616, came more than 3000 years after it was first alluded to in Leviticus.

The book of Psalms relates how the fish swim in "the paths of the seas".

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.  Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.  When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;  what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?  For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: all sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.  O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!  Psalms 8

This "paths of the seas" phrase intrigued Matthew Maury, a US naval officer during the 19th century. He became interested in the concept presented and spent most of his career studying and mapping "the paths of sea", what we now call ocean currents.  How did the Israelites know about ocean currents? They were, for the most part a rural, farming people who hired others to do whatever seafaring they needed done. Only God could have revealed this nugget.

Scriptures include reasonably complete descriptions of the hydrologic cycle that waters the earth.

When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.  Jeremiah 10:13

He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.  Psalms 135:7

The verses above describe several phases of the hydrological cycle.the worldwide processes of evaporation, translation aloft by atmospheric circulation, condensation with electrical discharges and precipitation.

For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof: which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.  Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?  Job 36:27-29

The drops of water, which eventually fall as rain, first become vapor and then condense to liquid droplets in the clouds.  These droplets combine to form raindrops that are large enough to overcome the updrafts that suspend them in the air, and finally fall to earth.

Even the fact that human spiritual and mental health is strongly interrelated with physical health is shown in numerous places in scripture.

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.  Proverbs 14:30

The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.  Proverbs 15:30

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.  Proverbs 16:24

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.  Proverbs 17:22

Human mental health is still not understood. Maybe diligent search of the scriptures could provide answers to the questions that abound in this scientific area.

The Bible is not a scientific textbook, but it is consistent with scientific facts.  In fact, long ago, scripture was consistent with the facts before mankind even knew there were any facts!  Is that the case today?  Probably so!
