When GOD Speaks, What
Does it Sound Like?

Hearing GOD's voice is something we all long for-but did you know that it's not hard to do?  In fact, GOD wants you to hear His voice!  Hearing the voice of GOD is as natural as hearing your best friend talk to you.  Did you ever wish that GOD could, or would, speak directly to you.in a voice that you could hear with your own ears?  Sound impossible?  It might surprise you that the Bible actually records GOD speaking audibly to people many times.

GOD spoke to Moses.

And GOD said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the Children of Israel, The Lord GOD of your fathers, the GOD of Abraham, the GOD of Isaac, and the GOD of Jacob, hath sent me unto you; this is my name forever, and this is my memorial unto all generations Exodus 3:14

GOD spoke to Joshua.

Now after the death of Moses, the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke unto Joshua, the son of Nun, saying.Joshua 1.1

GOD spoke to Gideon.

And the LORD looked upon him, and said, go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites.  Have not I sent thee.  Judges 6:14

GOD spoke to Samuel.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone that heareth it shall tingle.  1 Samuel 3:11

GOD spoke to David.

And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the LORD, saying, shall I go up into any of the cities Judah?  And the LORD said unto him, go up.  And David said, where shall I go up?  And he said, unto Hebron  2 Samuel 2:1

GOD spoke to Job.

Moreover the LORD answered Job and said, Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him?  He that reproveth GOD let him answer it.  Job 40:1-2

GOD spoke to Isaiah...

Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou and Sherarjashub, thy son at the end of the conduit ot the upper pool in the highway of fuller's field.Isaiah 7:3

God spoke to Jeremiah...

But the Lord said unto me, say not, I am a child; for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.Jeremiah 1:7

GOD spoke to Ananias...

But the Lord said unto him, go thy way; for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel; Acts 9:15

There are many more examples than these.  These are just a few of hundreds of examples.  There is no Biblical reason why God could not or would not speak to a person audibly today.  With the hundreds of times the Bible records God speaking, we have to remember that they occur over the course of four thousand years of human history. God speaking audibly is most certainly the exception, not the rule. Even in the Biblically recorded instances of God speaking, it is not always clear whether it was an audible voice, an inner voice, or a mental impression.

God does, however, speak to people today.  He speaks in several ways.   First, God speaks to us through His Word.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.  2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Bible records God's words to us in everything we need to know in order to be saved and live the Christian life.

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth; it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:11

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue; by which are given unto us exceedingly great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:3-4

You may have heard it said that the Bible is just a book written by men, but the Bible itself claims to be GOD's Word! Can we rely on it? The evidence of history, archaeology, fulfilled prophecy and personal testimony over thousands of years is overwhelming that the Bible is, indeed, GOD's Word. Do you want to hear God's voice? Then read the Bible. Find a good daily reading plan, and stick to it.

Secondly, GOD speaks through prayer.  When you want to have a conversation with someone, how do you begin? Do you stand in front of the person and hope they will talk to you? That might work, if the other person is outgoing enough, but usually we begin a conversation by opening our own mouths and talking, engaging the other person's attention. It's the same with GOD! He loves to hear us talk to Him, and it's in those moments that we prepare ourselves to hear the voice of God. Prayer is like saying, "Hello, GOD, it's me. I believe that You created me and that You know way more about how I should live my life than I do. I'd like to get to know You better. Here's what's going on in my life, and I'd sure like Your thoughts on how to handle it. Would You please speak to me about this today?"

In an ordinary conversation, we speak, then listen for the response of the other person. It's the same with God! Once we've prepared our hearts to listen through prayer, we're more likely to hear the voice of God. Does He speak to us through an audible voice? Some claim He does, but usually that's not the case. We may not actually "hear" the voice of God, but He speaks to us in many ways.

Through prayer and our daily lives here on earth, walking with Him, GOD speaks through impressions, events, and thoughts.

For instance, GOD helps us to discern right from wrong through our consciences.

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned, 1 Timothy 1:5

Having a good conscience, that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.  1 Peter 3:16

GOD is also in the process of conforming our minds so we can prove the will of GOD for us in our lives.if we let Him.

And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of GOD.  Romans 12:2

GOD even allows events to occur in our lives to direct us, change us, and help us to grow spiritually.

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations, knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.   But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.  If any of you lack wisdom, ley him ask of GOD, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.  James 1:2-5

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him; for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  But if ye be without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.  Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence.  Shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of holiness.  Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yeildeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them who are exercided by it.  Hebrews 12:5-11

In this ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations, that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.  1 Peter 1:6-7

The second chapter of Acts describes the events that occurred on the day of Pentecost, after Jesus ascended into Heaven.  Jesus, previously had made a promise.

But the Comforter, who is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you. John 14:26

The account in Acts says they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, the Comforter promised by Jesus. This unique aspect of God's personality did not come to them as someone they could see and touch, but rather He came to live inside them. That same Holy Spirit is available to you and me today. You already have the Holy Spirit available to you. The day you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior the Holy Spirit made His residence within you.  Ask God for a fresh filling everyday, and He will prepare your heart to hear God's voice.

His Spirit, that still, small voice inside you, is the One who will remind you of what God said, and help you recognize God's opportunities in your life.

Finally, GOD can and likely does sometimes speak audibly to people. These days we read and hear all kinds of claims regarding "hearing" from God. How can we know who or what to believe? Does God really speak to people today, and if He does, can we hear Him like we hear anyone else?  It is doubtful, though, that GOD speaking audibly occurs as often as some people claim it does.  As with many things pertaining to GOD, His speaking is a personal thing, between Him and us, audible or not. Remember, GOD is GOD, after all, and can communicate with us any way He chooses.

Again, even in the Bible, GOD speaking audibly is the exception, not the rule. If anyone claims that GOD has spoken, always compare what is said with what the Bible says. If GOD speaks today, His words would be in full agreement with what He has said in his Word, the Bible. GOD does not contradict Himself.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.  2 Timothy 3:16-17

Listening to God is an important part of the Christian life. God desires to speak to us and we have the privilege of listening to His instruction and guidance.  How can we discipline ourselves to hear the voice of God?  There are ways that this listening can be enhanced!

As amazing as it sounds, just plan ahead a little! Construct or restructure your schedule so you can spend uninterrupted time with your GOD. Find a quiet place and bring along your Bible, notebook, and pen. Prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. Approach GOD with a pure heart, righteous motives, and a desire to hear from Him. Spend time confessing sin and receiving GOD's forgiveness.  Spend time in prayer, worship, scripture reading, and meditation on GOD's Word. As you read GOD's Word, ask Him to speak to you.  Wait expectantly.  Spend time in silence, waiting for GOD to speak in your spirit.  Ask Him questions and then await His answer.  Obey whatever GOD tells you to do.  Continue your time of waiting on GOD throughout the day.  Always be listening for His voice.

So.you have always thought that GOD may have spoken to others.but not to you.  He's been there all along.and He hasn't been quiet.  The question is "are you listening"?  If you think about it you can see that GOD has been speaking to you all along and if you pay attention, when GOD speaks you know exactly what it sounds like!

Be blessed and meditate or meditate and be blessed.. the choice is yours!
